The Institute of Ibizan Studies, against the "new attack" by the Catalan Government on the Catalan language: "They want to dismantle the only space where Catalan is protected"
They demand a "firm and cross-cutting commitment" from all institutions, entities and citizens to reaffirm the role of Catalan as a vehicular language
PalmThe Institute of Ibizan Studies (IEE) expressed this on Wednesday their deep concern about "the new attacks" on the language that the Government of the Balearic Islands wants to carry out"Further marginalizing" the social use of Catalan as the official language of the Balearic Islands. He criticizes the fact that with recent political decisions and the lack of institutional will to guarantee the presence of the language in all public spheres, "they now intend to further reduce it in schools," which he considers "the only space where Catalan is effectively protected."
According to the Institute, the measures that, in the words of politicians, aim to "balance" the presence of Catalan and Spanish, conceal "a desire for the progressive displacement of the island's own language." It asserts that the PP's proposals aim to dismantle "the only space where Catalan maintains effective protection, which is in the educational sphere," which, "if ultimately approved, would represent a serious setback in guaranteeing linguistic rights and social cohesion." For this reason, the Institute of Ibizan Studies calls for "a firm and comprehensive commitment" from all institutions, entities, and citizens to reaffirm the role of Catalan as a language of instruction, a language of welcome, and a language of coexistence. "No society can progress if it renounces its voice, and our voice, the one that has made us who we are, is and must continue to be Catalan," they declared.
