Gaspar Rosselló Nicolau, key manager of the UB, dies in Pollensa

PalmThe Mallorcan Gaspar Rosselló Nicolau (1950-2025), professor, university administrator, and prominent figure in the academic world with a career deeply linked to the University of Barcelona (UB), died in an accident in Pollença (Mallorca), according to the university.
Rosselló died this Friday while walking with his grandson, after slipping and falling off a cliff in Cala Sant Vicenç. His family has expressed their heartfelt gratitude for all the support and affection they have received. "He was a very beloved person in Pollença and at the UB, very involved," said one of his relatives.
The UB points out that his loss leaves a "deep void" in the university community, which will remember him for "his tireless dedication, his visionary spirit, and his human qualities." The University of Barcelona will organize a memorial and tribute event in the fall.
PhD in Physics
PhD in Physics from the UB in 1981 with the qualification of cum laudoRosselló graduated in Physics in 1973. His academic career began in the field of astronomy and astrophysics, eventually becoming a full professor and an active member of the research community in this discipline.
Over the years, he participated in 13 research projects funded by entities such as the Argentine Center for Scientific and Technological Information, the Interministerial Commission for Science and Technology, the Spanish-French Integrated Action, the General Directorate of Scientific and Technical Research, among others. He also supervised various theses in the fields of observational astronomy and astrometry, with contributions published in international scientific journals.
With more than 30 years dedicated to university management, Rosselló established himself as one of the most authoritative and respected voices in the Catalan university system, according to the UB.
Since the early 90s, he has been part of several UB government teams, holding relevant positions such as Director of Academic Affairs, Vice-Rector for Academic Policy, Students and Quality, and advisor to the Rector in the European Convergence process.
He also represented the UB at the Specialized University Center for Tourism and Hospitality (CETT) and collaborated with state organizations such as the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA), as well as with academic committees and university government bodies at state and European levels.

He had recently been appointed president of the Ateneu UB, a position that symbolizes institutional recognition for a lifetime of commitment to the University. Involved in both daily management and the definition of major strategic lines, he made a decisive contribution to the modernization of the UB and its adaptation to new European and international challenges.
His work was essential not only in teaching and research, but also in the transformation of the university toward a more autonomous, efficient, and quality-focused model.
