PalmThe Civil Guard and Customs Surveillance have arrested a 74-year-old man at the port of Palma as he attempted to smuggle 44 kilos of cocaine hidden in a false bottom of his vehicle. The incident, as reported by the Civil Guard Command in the Balearic Islands in a statement, took place on Wednesday during a random check carried out as a regular ferry from Barcelona to Palma disembarked at the commercial dock. The officers, aided by a drug-sniffing dog, inspected both the interior and exterior of the vehicles as they disembarked. The dog showed particular interest in a specific area of one of the vehicles, so the officers decided to conduct a manual search. Hidden in a false bottom, the officers found 38 bags containing 44 kilos of cocaine, valued at approximately 1.18 million euros. Operation Tebal also resulted in the seizure of €5,200 in cash. The 74-year-old man was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a drug trafficking offense. He is expected to appear before a judge on Thursday.
