Maria parks the 'handicapped' to give way to 'people with reduced mobility'

Maria of the HealthThe Maria de la Salut City Council will soon replace the municipal road signage that still includes the term 'handicapped' to describe parking reservations. The mayor, Jaume Ferriol, has confirmed this measure following the formal request registered by the local socialist group.

The socialist group's petition requested the immediate removal of this terminology from both the signs and municipal documentation. Toni Moreno, a representative of the socialists, explained that "the initiative stems from the need to adapt institutional language to current legislation and, specifically, to the recent reform of Article 49 of the Spanish Constitution, which eliminated the term 'diminished' from the constitutional text to consolidate more inclusive concepts such as 'people with disabilities' and 'Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM)'.

As explained by the mayor, Jaume Ferriol, the intervention will affect a total of four reserved parking signs currently remaining in the town, which will be changed to the nomenclature of 'people with reduced mobility'.

Likewise, the City Council will take advantage of this renewal of road signage to update the fortnightly or monthly parking signage. Specifically, the traditional even and odd signs will be replaced with new signs that will explicitly indicate the names of the months of the year in which parking will not be allowed on one side or the other of the street, with the aim of facilitating clarity and mobility for the municipality's drivers.

The City Council points out that the correct words are also used in all cases in the official documentation of the Town Hall.
