Neighbors of Santa Catalina and the Maritime Promenade organize a protest to denounce the impact of noise on residents
The protest is part of the International Noise Awareness Day and demands more municipal control
PalmThe neighborhood associations of Santa Catalina and El Jonquet, La Llotja, and the Palma Maritime Promenade will publicly denounce next Wednesday the effects of noise on residents' health. The action is part of the International Noise Awareness Day and aims to focus on a problem they consider to be chronic in these neighborhoods.
According to the entities' joint statement, the campaign aims to call on both citizens and the City Council to implement "real and effective" measures, especially regarding the control of mass nightlife. The groups warn that coexistence in the most affected neighborhoods continues to deteriorate due to noise pollution.
Associations recall that there is scientific evidence demonstrating that noise has a direct impact on health, as it activates physiological mechanisms with possible cardiovascular, metabolic, and nervous system consequences, with long-term cumulative effects.
In this regard, they point out that this scientific basis supports legal claims such as the recent ruling by the Superior Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands, which described the noise suffered by residents in the bullring area during concerts organized in the venue as “acoustictorture”.
With the slogan ‘Noise is torture’, which can already be seen on posters hanging on several balconies, the main protest will take place on Wednesday at 6:00 PM at the corner of Fàbrica and Argentina Avenue streets. In parallel, in front of the bullring, local residents will share their experiences and show support for the entities working to combat this problem.
The initiative is added to the actions promoted throughout the State by the National Federation of Associations Against Noise, which promotes information days and mobilizations to demand a more forceful response to noise in cities.
