Palma opens the door to building more homes with changes to the General Plan
The proposal, promoted by Vox, was approved this Tuesday during the second session of the debate on the state of the city
PalmaPalma City Council's plenary session has approved modifying the General Plan of 2023 with the aim of making better use of consolidated urban land and facilitating the construction of more homes in the city. The initiative, promoted by Vox and approved with the favorable votes of this group and the PP, will allow for the harmonization of building heights and the modification of urban planning indices that are considered "obsolete". The proposal was approved this Tuesday during the second session of the state of the city debate and also urges the government team to urgently transform the Urban Planning Management into an autonomous body.
Vox councilor, Fulgencio Coll, defended the need to reform urban planning to increase housing supply. "They did nothing when they were in government and now they oppose measures to increase the supply," he criticized, referring to the left-wing groups. In housing matters, MÉS per Palma and the PSOE have called for Palma to be declared a tense area to limit rental prices, while Unides Podem has proposed expropriating repeat illegal tourist homes to be used for residential purposes.
These proposals have been rejected by the votes against from the PP and Vox, who insisted that price limitation "does not work". The Councilor for Urban Planning and Housing, Óscar Fidalgo, accused the left of not contributing "any new proposal" in housing matters. The socialists also reproached the government team for announcing more than a thousand homes within the shock plan at the beginning of the legislature and that currently "there is not a single building permit". On the other hand, the plenary session has unanimously approved to request the Spanish government and Casa 47 to incorporate the demands of neighborhood groups and the City Council into the special plan for Son Busquets.
A proposal has also been approved to demand a "serious" commitment from the state government to the Justice City project, after years of delays and an announced investment exceeding 90 million euros. This initiative has had the support of all groups except the PSOE. Finally, Vox has also secured the support of the PP to call for an acceleration in the renewal of the EMT bus fleet.
