Sara del Mar García, Kellys representative: "We have had no contact with the new government."
Only 65 of the 115 hotels inspected have complied with the regulations on elevating beds.
PalmNearly half of the tourist establishments inspected by the Consell de Mallorca between May 2024 and May 2025 did not comply with current regulations and did not have elevating beds. This is evident from the data the Consell provided in response to a written question posed by Councilor Joana Maria Adrover (PSIB). These types of beds are used to facilitate the work of chambermaids, who suffer physical pain as a result of routine room cleaning. Speaking to ARA Baleares, union representative Sara del Mar García expressed her dissatisfaction with the situation. "We have tried to meet with the Government and the Consell, but it has not been possible, nor have they ever yelled at us," she explains. "We have had no contact."
The difference, he asserts, is notable compared to the previous term, when dialogue was constant. Sources from the Consell explain that they are unaware of these attempts. They also do not clarify whether they have attempted to meet with representatives of the union. "For us, elevating beds are very important, because we improve our health," explains García. "In the hotel where I work, with 40% of the elevating beds required by law, I have noticed a big difference: I don't have back pain, like before," he continues. Working without this type of bed leads to injuries such as "herniated discs, low back pain, and sciatica," he specifies.
According to data provided by the Consell to the PSIB, between May 2024 and May 2025, 115 inspections were carried out in hotel establishments: 65 complied with the regulations and 50 did not. Regarding accommodation quality, 17 visits were made to five-star establishments, 13 of which complied with regulations and four did not. Eight four-star superior establishments were inspected: five had appropriate bedding and three did not. Of the four-star establishments, 53 were visited, 29 of which complied with the regulations and 24 did not. In the three-star establishments, of the 28 inspected, only 16 complied with the rules. Meanwhile, in the five two-star establishments visited, only two were in good condition for workers. The two one-star establishments and the two rural hotels without a classification that were inspected also did not comply. "I would say there are still more than comply," warns García: "The inspectors do not reach all the hotels, especially in the northern part of Mallorca, where the workers complain that no one goes."
Summer Inspection Campaign
On behalf of the Consell, the Department of Tourism states that efforts are currently focused "on the summer inspection campaign, which foresees more than 3,000 inspections in Mallorca, both legal and illegal," which also includes checking the supply of elevating beds. "The results will be conclusive when the summer campaign concludes," they explain. On behalf of the Ministry of Labor, this newspaper is awaiting a response from the department.
