Salvador Martínez, coordinator of Mallorca per la Pau and a pacifist reference on the island, dies
The activist has died due to cancer after years of work to unite collectives and promote solidarity mobilization in Mallorca
PalmaSalvador Martínez, coordinator of the Mallorca per la Pau platform and one of the most active voices in the island's pacifist movement, has died from cancer. The news has prompted numerous expressions of condolence from the social groups with whom he had shared years of mobilizations and networking.
“We are in mourning,” begins the message announcing his death. The text remembers Martínez as a tireless activist, capable of building bridges between different entities and turning shared causes into collective mobilizations. “His tireless work, his know-how, and his bravery fostered convergences between groups and a solidarity activism in Mallorca,” highlights the farewell, which also conveys condolences to the family.
In recent years, Martínez had served as coordinator and spokesperson for Mallorca per la Pau, a platform that brings together associations, non-governmental organizations, trade unions, and political parties. From this space, he participated in numerous calls against wars, the increase in military spending, and violations of international law, as well as in acts of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
One of his last public appearances took place last January, during a rally called in Palma following the United States' attack on Venezuela. Martínez argued at the time that the response to conflicts should be through “cooperation, dialogue, and de-escalation,” and called on the European Union and the Spanish government to strongly defend international law. “We are not taking sides with Maduro, but in favor of peace,” he remarked.
His career was marked precisely by this ability to bring together diverse sensitivities around common goals. Beyond their presence at demonstrations, the groups with whom he worked highlight his constancy, his bravery, and an organizational effort often far from the spotlight.
“It has been an honor to share the journey with him,” concludes the farewell message. Martínez's death leaves Mallorca's pacifist and solidarity movement without one of the people who had contributed most to weaving its complicities.
