Prohens does not respond to the meeting request of GOB and Terraferida, who warn: "We will not stop"

PalmaJust one day after the demonstration on July 26, GOB and Terraferida requested a meeting with the President of the Government, Marga Prohens, and the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés. Neither of the two leaders has shown any sign of life so far, nor have they expressed any intention to meet with the activists, who are demanding that the outcry against the saturation of more than 70,000 people who took to the streets on 26-J be heard. "We have not received any response and it concerns us," pointed out GOB representative Tonina Siquier, adding a warning: "We will not stop. We have just begun." Siquier emphasized that Prohens and Galmés are "the only two people who can take measures against overpopulation." "Prohens says she agrees with the demands and that the Pact did it badly, as if the current responsibilities did not concern her," she added.

Both entities have presented five concrete measures to "start reducing the pressure". "There are no excuses, the citizens have asked for it in an exemplary way", Siquier continued. The GOB activist recalled that the next protest will be held on Saturday in Sóller. "We give our support and we will be there. It is a municipality that collapses more obviously due to its circumstances", he said.

Regarding the measures, GOB and Terraferida demand an end to tourist rentals and the recovery of housing for affordable residential use. In this way, they consider it essential to "declare all of Mallorca a tense zone" and to "deploy decisive action against illegal tourist rentals". They also request that the urbanization of rural land be stopped and that an immediate moratorium be decreed on the construction of new swimming pools, "a key element of high purchasing power tourism", pointed out Tona Fuster, from Terraferida. "No more licenses should be granted. With the urban land available for building, many homes can be constructed", she said, in addition to recalling that "overcrowding did not occur until the explosion of tourist rentals".

Another point is to put an end to policies of territorial desprotection. "The administrative simplification regulations must be repealed", the activists remarked, citing the Omnibus Law, approved by Parliament before the end of the session, as an example of territorial destruction. "Under this label, environmental guarantees have been dismantled and the urbanization of the territory has been favored", they continued.

On the other hand, the entities demand that the maximum number of vehicles that can circulate in Mallorca be limited and that public transport in Mallorca be promoted. And they have put on the table the need to guarantee climate security with an integral adaptation and mitigation strategy that protects citizens and the territory: reinforcement of the green infrastructure of the municipalities, deployment of a network of climate shelters and priority installation of solar panels in industrial and degraded areas to preserve rural agricultural and forest land.

Regarding Prohens' arguments, who assures that the Government is already applying limits, Siquier attributes them to "a makeup policy" by the institutions. "They pay more for newspaper ads than to take measures. We ask them to get to work, because they have passed laws contrary to what the citizens demand and marketing policy does not stop," he added.
