The Council of Mallorca has not ruled out importing Menorca's waste to Mallorca. The vice president of the island institution, who also serves as the councilor for the Environment, Rural Affairs, and Sports, Pedro Bestard, stated this Thursday, in response to rumors that the Balearic Government is fighting for Menorca's waste, that Menorca "has not yet made any request" to transfer its waste to Mallorca, but assured that "the plant has the capacity to receive it." Regarding rumors that the Balearic Government commissioned a report assessing the transfer of Menorca's waste to Mallorca, Bestard insisted that "at this time, nothing can be said because nothing is known." However, he emphasized that if Menorca "submits a request to transfer its waste, the process will be studied." And what about the transfer of Ibiza's waste?

Although there is already talk of importing waste from Menorca to Mallorca, the transfer of manure from Ibiza Bestard admitted that they "don't yet have a pilot plan in place." He explained that, due to the recent approval of the regulations providing legal cover for waste transfers, some data is still missing, and "until everything is finalized, there won't be a complete file," he emphasized. Therefore, it's still unknown when the waste imports will begin, but he asserted that "they will definitely be transported this year," and he hoped they would be moved "before summer." He further specified that "they are studying how it can be transported."

How the waste imports will be carried out is a question that has gained momentum after the Government approved the decree which "creates the legal framework that makes it possible," said the First Vice President of the Government and Minister of Economy, Antoni Costa, at a press conference. The Executive recently approved the new Decree on strategic projects after reaching an agreement with Vox with "slight modifications," according to Costa, compared to the original.

"The waste transfer is good for the people of Mallorca"

PSIB councilor Jaume Mateu asked Bestard if he considered the importation of waste from outside the archipelago to be good for Mallorca. "Yes, it's good for the Mallorcans," was his only reply to Bestard. He also criticized the Socialists, saying, "They're very supportive of Africa, but not of Ibiza." Furthermore, he called the Socialists "four busybodies who just chatter." Meanwhile, MÁS per Mallorca denounced the PP's desire to turn Mallorca "into the dumping ground for the entire archipelago." The eco-sovereignist spokesperson, Catalina Inès Perelló, warned that "Mallorca cannot continue to be the easy target every time a PP government hasn't done its job. First it was Ibiza, and now we know that Menorca is also an option. This is no longer an exception; it's a change of model that could turn Mallorca into the central receiving point for all the waste."
