The extraction of the Roman ship from Les Fontanelles has begun

PalmOn Tuesday, the operation to extract the Les Fontanelles shipwreck began in Mallorca. This 4th-century autumn vessel was discovered in 2019 by a diver just 65 meters from the coast. The archaeological intervention, considered crucial for ensuring the preservation and scientific understanding of the site, will allow for a deeper understanding of maritime trade and navigation during the Roman era.

The shipwreck, approximately 12 meters long and 5 meters wide, contains 300 amphorae of various types with painted inscriptions, considered among the most important documented in the Mediterranean. Some contained organic remains and offer direct information about the diet and trade of the period. Experts also highlighted the "exceptional" state of preservation of the wood, making this site an international benchmark for underwater archaeology.

Scientific and technical coordination

The operation is being led by a team specializing in underwater archaeology and heritage conservation, with representatives from the University of Barcelona, ​​the University of Cádiz, the University of Valencia, and the University of the Balearic Islands. The first phase focuses on removing the sand covering the ship, an essential task before proceeding to the subsequent extraction stages. The entire process is expected to take approximately four months, although this will depend on sea and weather conditions. A laboratory has been set up at Sant Carles Castle to receive and process the archaeological material as it is extracted, ensuring its preservation and detailed study. Public dissemination and exhibition

The responsible institution has announced that the research findings will be presented to the public in an exhibition to be held in the coming months at the Misericordia Cultural Center. The aim is to bring this project closer to the public and to highlight the historical and scientific significance of the Les Fontanelles shipwreck.

The operation has been planned taking into account its impact on the surrounding area. Local residents, hotels, and restaurants, as well as law enforcement and other institutions, have been kept informed to ensure optimal coordination throughout the work.
