The Mallorcan lawyer Jaime Campaner will defend Begoña Gómez, Pedro Sánchez's wife
He has already filed a document before the court in which he requests to extend the deadline to file his defense brief
PalmaBegoña Gómez, wife of the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has decided to change lawyers as the legal case against her enters the pre-trial phase. Mallorcan criminal lawyer Jaime Campaner will now take over her defense in the proceedings in which she is charged with alleged crimes of influence peddling and embezzlement.
Campaner has now formally communicated the change to Investigating Court number 41 of Madrid, headed by magistrate Juan Carlos Peinado, who is investigating the case. The change occurs when only the opening of the oral trial, which will have to be conducted with a popular jury in the Provincial Court of Madrid, remains pending.
Until now, Gómez's defense had been in the hands of Antonio Camacho, a former prosecutor and former Minister of the Interior, who had represented her since the investigation was opened on April 16, 2024, following a complaint filed by Manos Limpias. During this period, Camacho has promoted dozens of appeals against the resolutions adopted by the investigating judge.
According to the same sources, the change has been agreed upon consensually between Gómez and Camacho. The Spanish Prime Minister's wife has expressed her gratitude for the work done over more than two years at the head of proceedings she considers particularly complex, and has highlighted his rigor and dedication in defending her interests.
Jaime Campaner is managing partner of the Campaner Law firm, specializes in criminal law and criminal procedure, and holds a PhD in Procedural Law from the Complutense University of Madrid. Throughout his career, he has participated in some of the most high-profile judicial cases in recent years. He defended Josep Pujol Ferrusola in the trial for the Pujol family's assets, which is still awaiting sentencing; he represented tax advisor Salvador Trinxet in the Nóos case and also FC Barcelona during the audit of the management of the previous board of directors under the presidency of Joan Laporta.
Furthermore, he has defended former Sacyr president Luis del Rivero in one of the pieces of the Villarejo case related to the commissions from Repsol and CaixaBank to prevent Sacyr and Pemex from taking control of the oil company. In this case, former commissioner José Manuel Villarejo was eventually acquitted.
The case against Begoña Gómez and her advisor, Cristina Álvarez, is now pending the submission of defense briefs. The popular prosecution, coordinated by Hazte Oír, is requesting 13 years in prison for Gómez and six for Álvarez, while the Public Prosecutor's Office has already announced that it will request the acquittal of both.
In parallel, the Complutense University of Madrid is claiming more than 113,000 euros from Begoña Gómez as civil liability for the software developed for the chair she co-directed at the university.
