The Maritime Captaincy immobilizes the ship that has to carry Ibiza's waste
The ship 'Al Andalus Express' is awaiting permits to start operating
PalmaThe Maritime Captaincy has immobilized the ship that is to transport the waste from Ibiza to Palma for a safety inspection. As reported by Diario de Ibiza and confirmed by Balearia, the ship Al Andalus Express is currently stopped and it is unknown when it will set sail. This is a new setback before the start of the pilot plan for the transfer of waste from the Pitiusa island, which begins this Wednesday.
Sources from the Consell d'Eivissa confirm that the Maritime Captaincy is reviewing the vessel, but explain that they do not have further information regarding this and continue to work with the prospect that the transfer will begin this evening. The forecast is that the first ship loaded with waste will arrive at the port of Palma today.
3,500 tons per month
The vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and head of Environment, Pedro Bestard, has traveled to Ibiza to oversee the operation. "There will be no inconvenience: the departure conditions are exceptional," he explained in statements to the media. As he explained, between six and seven trucks will carry out the import to the Son Reus incinerator, every evening, for five days a week. Despite this, Bestard insisted that this quantity represents "1% of the trucks that enter TIRME," the company responsible for waste management. "What Ibiza produces is what Mallorca produces in the month of February," he insisted.
