The Tramuntana mountain range will be restricted to all motor vehicles during the eclipse
The cuts will affect all planned roads from 3 p.m. on August 12, with exceptions for residents, workers, and justified travel
PalmaThe Government has clarified that the traffic restrictions planned for August 12, due to the eclipse, will apply to all motor vehicles, including motorcycles and mopeds. The measure is part of the Eclipbal operation, the special public security and emergency plan designed to manage one of the most important astronomical events in recent years.
As reported by the Ministry of the Presidency, Coordination of Government Action, and Local Cooperation, the decision was made by consensus with the rest of the organizations involved in the operation, including the Civil Guard, local police, municipalities, and emergency services.
The agreement was reached after the latest meetings of the Commission for the Management of Actions Related to the Total Solar Eclipse of 2026 and the meetings held with the mayors of the affected municipalities, especially those in the Serra de Tramuntana. Thus, access will be restricted to all motor vehicles from 3:00 PM on the approximately twenty roads included in the operation, with no exceptions based on vehicle type. The measure will affect roads on all four islands, notably the Ma-10, which crosses the Serra de Tramuntana, in addition to the specific restrictions planned for the municipality of Palma.
The Government has warned that road closures may be brought forward if circumstances require it. This is the case in Palma, where access to Palma Beach is planned to be restricted several hours before the start of the eclipse to avoid crowds. Despite the restrictions, residents, workers in the area, and all those who can duly prove the reason for their travel will be able to circulate on these roads.
The Executive recommends both residents and visitors to plan their journeys in advance and avoid unnecessary travel during the day to minimize traffic jams and ensure safe observation of the phenomenon. Furthermore, it reminds that all information about affected roads, exceptions to restrictions, and the necessary documentation to justify travel can be found on the website set up for the operation, which also details the 26 Official Observation Zones (ZOO) distributed throughout the Balearic Islands.
