PalmaThe Government of the Balearic Islands has begun the excavation work of the Comellar Fondo trench, in the municipality of Son Servera, with the aim of locating, exhuming, and identifying possible victims of the Civil War. The action is part of the V Plan of Trenches and focuses on a site linked to the combats of the Battle of Mallorca in the summer of 1936.

The mass grave is located on private property on the outskirts of the urban area, near the Puig de Son Corb, one of the main sites of the clashes between Republican troops and the fascist side during the first months of the Civil War.

According to the Government, the existence of this possible burial has been documented thanks to oral testimonies collected during historical investigations carried out within the framework of the IV Plan for Mass Graves. These accounts suggest that the site was used to bury dead combatants, although the number and identity of the possible victims are still unknown.

The work will be carried out by the temporary union of companies formed by the Aranzadi Science Society and ATICS, the contractor for the excavation, exhumation, and identification service of the V Plan for Mass Graves. In a first phase, archaeological surveys will be conducted to locate the grave and, if the presence of human remains is confirmed, exhumation and archaeological, anthropological, and genetic study will be carried out to attempt to identify the victims. This intervention continues the work initiated this year at the municipal cemetery of Son Servera and is part of the actions promoted by the Government to investigate different spaces related to the combats of the Battle of Mallorca.

The Executive also highlighted the collaboration of the property owners, who have facilitated access to the land so that the work can be carried out with all guarantees. With this new action, the Government reaffirms its commitment to the recovery of democratic memory, the identification of the victims of the Civil War, and their return to families so that they can receive a dignified burial.
