The May 1st demonstration in Palma calls for housing and no to war
The unions say that the war will define the new geopolitical configuration and the new economic model of the whole world
PalmThousands of people participated this Friday in the May 1st demonstration in Palma, which started from Plaza de España after 11:30 a.m. and traversed the center of the Balearic capital under the slogan 'Rights, not trenches. Salary, housing, and democracy' and with the rejection of the war in the Middle East also present.
UGT and CCOO have denounced this Friday the "unbalanced salaries" in the Balearic Islands that prevent access to housing, with prices that do not stop rising and that have turned it into a good "inaccessible for the vast majority of workers".
This has been stated by the general secretary of UGT in the Balearic Islands, Pedro Homar, and that of CCOO, José Luis García, in statements to the press from Palma, before the start of the demonstration. The mobilizations are headed by a banner with the slogan 'No to war'. In this regard, they have pointed out that the war will define the new geopolitical configuration and the new economic model of the whole world, which will have "repercussions at the local level".
According to the unions, the escalation of prices, especially housing, means that salary increases do not translate into “improvements for the working class”, despite the good situation of the labor market, with full employment and record figures in Social Security affiliation.
In any case, they maintain that May 1st "is not a party", but a day of protest, and that it is necessary for workers to "start to get indignant", given that the future of society will be marked by "whoever is capable of fighting for their rights".
Political leaders
Political leaders also participated in the demonstration, such as the spokespersons in the Parliament of the PSOE and MÉS per Mallorca, Iago Negueruela and Lluís Apesteguia, respectively, and the councilor of Podem in the Palma City Council, Lucía Muñoz.
On the political side, the PSOE general secretary of Palma and spokesperson for the socialists in the Parliament, Iago Negueruela, has insisted on the discourse about housing as the missing pillar to consolidate the improvements achieved, such as salary and pension increases.
In parallel to the demonstration by the majority unions, another one called by CNT and CGT has also paraded through the streets of Ciutat.
