Unemployment fell by 3.5% year-on-year in November in the Balearic Islands, and social security affiliation rose by 1.5%.

The Islands had 30,219 registered unemployed at the end of November, which is 2,534 more than in October, a 9.5% increase.

PalmThe number of people registered as unemployed with the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) in the Balearic Islands fell by 1,078 in November compared to the same month last year, representing a 3.5% decrease. Meanwhile, Social Security affiliation increased by 2.8% year-on-year, reaching 524,014 registered workers. The Balearic Islands had 30,219 registered unemployed at the end of November, 2,534 more than in October, a 9.5% increase, according to data published this Tuesday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy. There are 16,972 unemployed women and 13,247 unemployed men in the Balearic Islands. In addition, there are 4,522 unemployed people under the age of 25. Of the total unemployed in the Balearic Islands, 23,173 are from the services sector (2,564 more than in October); 3,204 are from construction; 1,278 from industry; 341 from agriculture; and 2,223 with no previous employment. Of the 30,219 unemployed, 7,504 are foreigners, 0.3% fewer than a year ago (25 fewer) but 24.8% more than in October (an increase of 1,491 unemployed). Of the unemployed foreigners, 2,740 are from the EU (36.5%) and 4,764 are from outside the EU (63.5%). The Balearic Islands registered 23,835 contracts in November, 599 fewer than a year ago, representing a decrease of 2.4%, and 4,265 fewer than in October, a month-on-month decrease of 15.2%. A total of 15,446 permanent contracts were signed in the Balearic Islands, 100 more than in November of last year (a 0.6% increase), but 2,109 fewer than in October (-12%). Eight thousand three hundred and eighty-nine temporary contracts were also signed, 7.7% fewer than a year ago (-699) and 20.4% fewer than in October (-2,156). In October, 27,413 people in the Balearic Islands received unemployment benefits: 21,720 contributory benefits, 5,663 subsidies, and 30 active insertion income. Expenditure on benefits in the Balearic Islands totaled €40.75 million in October (€32.5 million in contributory benefits and €8.1 million in unemployment subsidies), with an average benefit of €1,114.70.

Regarding Social Security affiliation, it fell by 15.3% compared to October, with 94,457 fewer registered workers in the Balearic Islands – where the peak tourist season has ended – according to data from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration. Of the total number of affiliates, 419,261 are under the general scheme and 102,696 are self-employed. In addition, there are 7,924 domestic workers registered under the domestic service scheme; 2,414 under the agricultural scheme; and 2,056 under the maritime scheme.
