The UIB will review all buildings following an accident where a student was injured by a falling window
The measure has been taken after, due to a gust of wind, the structure fell inside a classroom of the Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos building
PalmFollowing the accident registered this Wednesday, May 13, on the UIB campus, the institution has decided to intensify the review plan for all campus buildings. The measure was taken after a glass window detached due to a gust of wind and fell into a classroom in the Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos building while a class was in session, causing a student to be injured. The review has been prioritized especially in the buildings where university entrance exams will be held: Gaspar M. de Jovellanos, Guillem Cifre de Colonya, and Antoni M. Alcover i Sureda.
The accident occurred during an ordinary school day, when a strong gust of wind affected a window in a classroom of the Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos building. The glass detached and fell inside the room at the moment students were in class.
The window impacted directly on a student's desk, who received a blow to the head as a result of the impact. Despite the potential seriousness of the situation, the rest of the students were not injured. The UIB Medical Unit attended to the young woman immediately on campus. Subsequently, she was transferred to a hospital for a more complete evaluation and treatment of her injuries. The university has reported that, after being assisted, she was discharged shortly after.
Ensuring safety
Following this event, the UIB has announced the initiation of a comprehensive review of all closing and facade elements of the campus buildings, with particular attention to windows and fastening systems that may be affected by wind episodes or other adverse weather conditions.
Furthermore, the institution has reinforced preventive maintenance protocols and the periodic inspection of teaching spaces, with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of the entire university community and preventing similar situations from recurring. The UIB has deeply regretted the accident, has expressed its support for the injured student, and has wished her a speedy recovery, with the hope that she can return to classes as soon as possible.
