PalmaTossing and turning in bed, sheets clinging to your body, windows open without a breath of air coming in and fans running all night long. If you could barely sleep last night, it wasn't just a feeling: the Balearic Islands have experienced an infernal night, with temperatures that in some places did not drop below 30 degrees.

The most extreme case was recorded in Banyalbufar, where the minimum temperature was 33 degrees, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). In Port de Sóller, the thermometer did not drop below 32 degrees, while in Escorca-Lluc the minimum was 30 degrees.

The situation was repeated in the Pitiusas Islands. In Sant Antoni de Portmany, Formentera, and Ibiza, the temperature also did not drop below 30 degrees during the last few hours. These are values typical of what is known as an infernal night, a designation used when the minimum remains above this threshold.

In the rest of the Archipelago, the early morning was also very hot. Numerous locations recorded a minimum above 25 degrees, the threshold from which a torrid night is spoken of. The heat accumulated during the day, combined with high humidity and lack of nocturnal cooling, made it especially difficult to fall asleep.

The heat is not easing up yet

After a suffocating early morning, the temperature will rise again this Thursday. Aemet forecasts maximums of up to 38 degrees in a large part of the Islands and 39 degrees in the north and northeast of Mallorca, where a yellow alert has been activated for heat. The rest of the affected areas are under a yellow alert. Meteorological warnings can be consulted and followed in real time on the Aemet website.

The change in weather, moreover, can be abrupt. Emergencies 112 has activated a yellow alert for storms, heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal phenomena in the Balearic Islands as a whole. Strong or very strong storms are forecast, with wind gusts that can reach 80 kilometers per hour.

Menorca is also on alert for rissagas, with sea level oscillations that can reach 0.7 meters. On Friday, the alerts for heat, wind, and coastal phenomena will be deactivated, but those related to storms, heavy rain, and rissagas will remain active.

Caution due to the change in weather

Given the extreme temperature, Emergencies recommends avoiding physical activity between 12 and 4 PM, seeking shade, covering your head, wearing light clothing, and drinking water frequently. It also reminds you never to leave children, the elderly, or animals inside a closed vehicle.

Due to strong wind gusts, it is recommended to close doors and windows and remove any objects from balconies that could fall. On the coast, avoid jetties, cliffs, and promenades affected by waves.

In case of heavy rain, 112 asks not to go down to basements or floodable garages and to avoid crossing areas covered with water. On the road, reduce speed, increase safety distance, and preferably use main roads.
