Manacor"It cannot be said yet, but it will be presented soon". This has been one of the most repeated phrases in recent hours by different members of the PP of Manacor when asked about Jaume Mut. Without officially confirming it, the Populars have corroborated with smiles and knowing gestures that the football coach will be their candidate for the mayoralty of Manacor in the municipal elections of May 2027.

The identity of the chosen one had initially generated some confusion, because his son, also Jaume Mut, was already part of the Manacor City Council as a councilor for El Pi two legislatures ago. But the PP candidate will be the father, a well-known and media-friendly figure within different spheres of the municipality, especially for his sporting connection with CE Manacor, a club he has coached in various stages.

Mut, who has no direct political experience, has maintained a close relationship with different former councilors and former mayors of the Manacor PP for years. Now he will take a step forward and lead the Populars' candidacy with the aim of regaining the mayoralty after two legislatures in opposition.

His election represents a plot twist for a PP that in recent years has not managed to consolidate clear leadership within the municipality. With Mut, the party is betting on a profile known beyond the strictly political sphere and with the capacity to gain public projection. The last time the Populars held the mayoralty was between 2017 and 2019, with lawyer Pedro Rosselló, during the last two years of the municipal term.

Ferran Montero, candidate for MÉS-Esquerra

The PP is the second of Manacor's main parties to begin showing its hand for the 2027 municipal elections. MÉS-Esquerra already confirmed in July that Ferran Montero, current councillor for Education and Culture, will take over from Miquel Oliver as candidate for mayor. ARA Balears had reported that Montero was the preferred choice to head the eco-sovereigntist candidacy and subsequently interviewed him once the decision was official. "I've always been more of a street person than an office person," he explained at the time.

The incorporation of Mut therefore outlines the first major electoral duel for 2027. Montero will represent the continuity of MÉS-Esquerra's project after eleven years of Oliver's leadership, while the PP will rely on a popular figure from the world of sport to try to regain a mayoralty they have not held since 2019. It remains to be seen who will lead the candidacies of the PSOE, Vox, and the rest of the parties.

A long career on the benches

Jaume Mut is currently the coach of Porreres, a team in the Segunda Federación. For many years and in different stages, he has been in charge of the first men's team of CE Manacor, with whom he achieved two consecutive promotions: from Regional Preferent to Tercera División and, subsequently, to Segunda B.

As a footballer, he played for several Mallorcan clubs, including Manacor and Felanitx. His subsequent coaching career has also taken him to Santanyí, Ferrioler, Cardassar, Campos, and Felanitx. Furthermore, he managed the División de Honor youth team of Atlètic Balears and, years later, the first team of Atlètic Balears, both in Primera and Segunda Federación.

Mut also served as assistant coach to Julio Velázquez at Alavés, in Primera División, and at Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football. This career has made him a recognized figure in Mallorcan football and, especially, among the Manacor fans.
