Aemet raises the alert for storms to orange this Thursday

PalmaAemet has raised the alert level for this Thursday and expects a day with greater intensity of rainfall, especially in Ibiza and Formentera, which will be under an orange alert for rain and storms throughout the day, with accumulations that could reach 50 liters per square meter in one hour. These rains could be accompanied by wind gusts of up to 50 kilometers per hour.

In Mallorca and Menorca, an orange alert for rain and storms will also be activated for this Thursday, although the level would be lowered to yellow starting at 08:00 hours. On these islands, rainfall could reach 30 liters per square meter in one hour.

In addition, the wind associated with the storms has prompted the activation of the yellow alert for coastal phenomena in the north and northeast of Mallorca and in Menorca, with winds between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour and waves that could reach two meters in height.

Given the weather forecasts, the General Directorate for Emergencies and Interior maintains the corresponding alerts of the Meteobal Plan activated.

The orange alert for rainfall and storms (IG-1 of the Meteobal Plan) remains active in all the Balearic Islands, as well as the yellow alert (IG-0 of the Meteobal Plan) for coastal phenomena in Mallorca and Menorca.

Emergencies insists on the need not to be overconfident in the face of these types of episodes, as weather conditions can change abruptly and intense precipitation can cause localized flooding, water accumulation, and incidents on the road network, torrents, and runoff areas.

Parks closed in Palma

For its part, the Palma City Council has closed, as of this Wednesday at 1 PM and while the alert decreed for rain remains active, the Ribera park and the Can Terrers park. Likewise, the Passeig de Sagrera will be closed starting at 00:00 hours and Bellver park from 9 PM. The Open Playgrounds program has also been suspended.

In Mallorca, the UIB has suspended outdoor activities, field trips, and activities in the marine environment since 1 PM due to the orange alert for heavy rain. The inaugural event of the Nature Classroom, scheduled for 4 PM, has also been cancelled.

For this Thursday, the UIB has also suspended outdoor university activities at the Ibiza and Formentera campus, due to the orange warning. Thus, field trips and activities in the marine and coastal environment scheduled in the Pityusic Islands are suspended, while at the Palma and Menorca campuses, academic and administrative activity will proceed normally, according to the university center.

Precipitation could leave more than 50 liters per square meter in one hour, while storms may be accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h.
