Arrested in Maó an insurance agent accused of swindling more than 100,000 euros from his clients

PalmaThe National Police of Mahón arrested an insurance agent this Monday who was misappropriating his clients' money intended for the payment of premiums. The police investigation began after the receipt of several complaints at the police station. The man had worked for more than 10 years as an exclusive agent for an insurance company in Menorca and acted as a mediator for the contracting of policies, life insurance, and investment plans.

The fraud came to light because, since he did not deposit the money into the insurance company's account, many policies were cancelled due to non-payment or, at times, ended up being charged twice by both the agent and the company. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the agent took out insurance policies in the names of people without their knowledge or consent.

Regarding life and investment products, the detainee made unauthorized provisions and withdrawals of money from his clients' accounts, amounting to over 100,000 euros. The undetected cancellation of these policies caused serious damage to those affected, such as traffic fines for driving without mandatory insurance in force, late payment fees, total lack of coverage in the event of claims, and costs derived from accidents.

Up to now, the insurance company has had to cover more than 7,000 euros derived from the scams reported by various clients, although the total defrauded figure is significantly higher and there are other scams pending formal claim. The National Police have made an appeal to all clients who have contracted insurance or financial products through this agent to verify that they are in force and, in case of detecting any irregularity or sign of fraud, to go and file the corresponding complaint at the offices of the National Police station in Mahón.
