Cort demands action in Son Busquets to avoid a scenario like the old prison
The council demands immediate security measures and more police presence from Casa 47. It will not proceed with the eviction of the people currently in the turrets of the old barracks.
PalmThe Palma City Council has confirmed that people are sleeping in the old Son Busquets barracks and has asked the state housing entity Casa 47–formerly Sepes– to act to guarantee the security of the premises and restore adequate conditions of control and protection, and to avoid a situation similar to that registered in the old prison.
According to the Palma council, the Local Police went this past Wednesday to the old Son Busquets barracks after a call from a neighborhood to 092, which alerted them to the entry into the premises of people not belonging to it. Upon arrival, the Immediate Intervention Unit (UII) confirmed the existence of belongings in several rooms, as well as clear signs that people are staying overnight in the place, independently of the people who currently occupy the turrets of the old barracks.
Likewise, the agents verified the existence of damage to different access elements of the enclosure, such as grates, concertina wire, windows, and low walls. Faced with this situation, the Palma City Council demands that Casa 47, the owner of Son Busquets, act immediately by adopting the necessary measures to guarantee the security of the enclosure and re-establish adequate control and protection conditions.Likewise, the City Council urges the Government Delegation to increase the presence of the National Police in the area and to promote the appropriate procedures with the Ministry and the central Government, in order to prevent the lack of action from leading to a situation similar to that of the old prison, where prolonged inaction has generated a scenario of insecurity and unsanitary conditions, with the consequent risk to people and the environment.
Along the same lines, Cort reiterates to Casa 47 the need to unblock the Son Busquets residential development project, which aims to increase the housing supply in the city. In this regard, the City Council has requested to accelerate its development through the application of the Strategic Residential Project (PRE) figure, which could contribute to speeding up the launch of a development necessary for the city, which has been paralyzed for decades. In response to information published in various media outlets, the City Council wishes to clarify that in no case will the Local Police proceed to evict the people currently in the turrets of the old Son Busquets barracks, as this is an action that does not fall within their responsibilities. In this regard, only the owner of the premises, in this case Casa 47, can initiate the corresponding eviction procedure, which in any case must be authorized by the competent judicial authority.
