New graffiti against mass tourism appear in the center of Palma

PalmaThe protest against tourist overcrowding in Mallorca continues to add protest actions. This Monday new graffiti has appeared in the center of Palma with messages such as "Tourism kills Mallorca" and "Your luxury our misery" written in both Catalan and English.

The graffiti has been done on Sant Gaietà street, parallel to the Born promenade and located a short distance from the headquarters of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Government. The messages once again focus on the discontent of a part of the citizenry with the tourism model of the Islands and the effects that, according to its promoters, it has on access to housing, public space and quality of life.

Precisely, the facade of the Ministry had already been the subject of a similar action on August 14. On that occasion, graffiti appeared with the message "Tourism kills", which was erased a few hours later.

The new graffiti arrives a few days after another protest action against mass tourism. Last week, a banner with the slogan "Mass tourism destroys Mallorca" appeared in s'Estret de Valldemossa, one of the busiest points on the road connecting the municipality with Palma.

The promoters chose this location because they consider Valldemossa to be one of the municipalities that suffers most intensely from tourist pressure and they assure that it is the second most overcrowded municipality in Mallorca.

The banner was installed at a particularly visible point for vehicles leaving Valldemossa, with the aim of the message reaching both residents and the thousands of visitors who travel daily on this road. The initiators of the action defended that it was a peaceful protest, without damaging urban furniture or using paint, and explained that the objective was "to generate awareness" about the problem of mass tourism.
