Palma rejects returning to its name 'Palma de Mallorca'
The PP and the opposition vote against it and the proposal fails to move forward.
PalmPalma says no to the addition of 'de Mallorca' to its name. The Cort Citizen Services Commission rejected this Thursday theVox's proposal to restore Palma de Mallorca as the official name of the city. The initiative failed to move forward after the Popular Party voted against it and the opposition (PSIB and MÁS) also rejected its support.
Vox's proposal argued that the full name of Palma de Mallorca has historical roots dating back to the city's founding by the Roman general Quint Cecili Metel in 123 BC. The municipal group argued that the specifier "Mallorca" had been used since ancient times to distinguish the city and that, over the centuries, it had become consolidated at both institutional and popular levels.
According to Vox, the legal change approved in 2016, which established that the official name would be simply "Palma" – as described in the Statute of Autonomy – responded to "ideological revisionism" and generated confusion. The group maintains that restoring Palma de Mallorca would strengthen the island's identity, provide international clarity, and be of great value for tourism promotion, given its globally recognized brand.
Specifically, the initiative urged the City Council to begin the process of restoring 'Palma de Mallorca' as the official name, without excluding the colloquial use of 'Palma', and to convey the agreement to the Balearic and Spanish governments to modify legislation and official registries.
Palma Mayor Jaime Martínez said at the start of his term that he had no plans to change the city's name. For his part, The University of the Balearic Islands and the city's own chronicler have spoken out in support of Palma on several occasions. without the addition.
