Christmas celebrations

Santa Catalina residents oppose the Christmas Market: "No one can endure 12 hours of carols a day for 45 days."

Neighborhood associations are demanding that Palma City Council move the event to a more suitable location, such as fairgrounds or areas away from residential areas.

PalmThe neighborhood associations of Santa Catalina and El Jonquet have expressed their rejection of the new Christmas Market in Palma, the Christmas event promoted by the City Council, which is scheduled to take place for a month and a half in Feixina Park.

Residents warn that the format, which they describe as "ambitious, massive, and long-lasting," will have "a strong impact" on daily life in the neighborhood. As detailed by the organizations in a statement, the market will be open from November 21 to January 6, for about ten hours a day during the week and up to twelve hours on weekends and holidays. In total, they estimate that it will involve "more than 500 hours of Christmas music" in the middle of a residential area.

"Imagine hearing twelve hours of Christmas carols a day for 45 days straight. No one can stand it," the associations lament.

Neighborhood groups believe that the project "puts Feixina Park at the service of private business" and that its format, "imported from other European countries," neglects local traditions.

They also warn that the event could generate noise, crowds, and traffic problems in an area already affected by nightlife.

For all these reasons, the organizations have asked Cort (City) to move the event to a "more suitable" space, such as fairgrounds or areas away from homes, and to respect the residential character of the neighborhood.
