PalmaThe incorporation of new resident doctors (MIR) in the Balearic health centers once again highlights the feminization of the medical profession. Of the 152 professionals who have started their specialized training period this year and have registered with the college in the Balearic Islands, 110 are women and 42 are men. This means that 72.3% of the new residents are women.

The new MIR doctors have received their membership card at a welcome event organized by the Official College of Physicians of the Balearic Islands (COMIB). The president of the institution, Dr. Carles Recasens, was in charge of presenting the accreditations to the residents who are beginning this new professional stage after completing their medical studies.

During his speech, Recasens emphasized that the increase in female presence in medicine brings new challenges for the healthcare system. As he pointed out, this reality makes it necessary to move towards more sustainable work models capable of adapting to the changes experienced by the profile of healthcare professionals.

7,577 registered physicians

With these new incorporations, the COMIB currently has a total of 7,577 registered doctors. By islands, 132 of the new residents have registered in Mallorca; 12 in Ibiza and 8 in Menorca. Regarding origin, 34.8% of the new MIR are originally from the Balearic Islands, while 36.8% come from the rest of Spain and 28.2% have other nationalities.

The specialties with the most places awarded this year are Family and Community Medicine, with 30 residents, and Pediatrics, with 8. In addition, the new specialty of Emergency Medicine incorporates three residents in the Islands. By hospital centers, Son Espases hosts the largest number of MIR, with 66 places, followed by Son Llàtzer, with 29.

During the welcome day, the COMJB officials also informed the residents about the advisory and support services offered by the institution, such as the Comprehensive Care Program for Sick Doctors (PAIME), the Second Victim Assistance Office, or the Aggressions Observatory, in addition to the various training initiatives aimed at the medical community.
