PalmThe Balearic Cultural Association (OCB) and the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) have organized a conference this Friday and Saturday on the conquest of Mallorca and its narrative, featuring historians and philologists. The event is titled The commemoration of the conquest of Mallorca. The construction of the narrative and will take place in the Archive of the Kingdom of Mallorca, as explained by the OCB in a statement.

The events begin this Friday at 10:00 AM with a presentation by the president of the OCB, Antoni Llabrés, the IEC delegate in Palma, Sebastià Alzamora, and the commissioner for the commemoration of the eighth centenary of the conquest of Mallorca, Gabriel Ensenyat. This will be followed by a lecture on how the conquest has been remembered throughout the centuries, given by Antoni Quintana, and another on the symbols of the founding of the Mallorcan state, presented by Antoni Ignasi Alomar. Later, a series of presentations will take place, including one on how legends and cultural tradition have treated Jaume I, given by Caterina Valriu, and another on the interpretation of the conquest in modern times by writers, historians, and politicians, with Margalida Tomàs among the speakers. During the afternoon, discussions will also include, among other topics, the event that was Fanny Tur's conquest of Ibiza and how the conquest is treated in current Balearic legislation, with Lluís Segura. On Saturday, Gabriel Mayol will delve into how similar historical events are remembered in other territories, and Gabriel Ensenyat will examine how the conquest has been commemorated over the last 50 years. The event will conclude with a presentation by both organizations offering their perspectives on how this milestone should be celebrated.
