The Bishop of Mallorca denounces the rhetoric against migrants: "There are unacceptable attitudes; calling them criminals is slander."
Sebastià Taltavull calls for an end to the criminalization of people who come from outside to live in Mallorca.

PalmThe Bishop of Mallorca, Sebastià Taltavull, has called on citizens and politicians to put an end to the rhetoric against migrants and certain attitudes that, in his opinion, are unacceptable. He spoke this Wednesday at a press conference to address, in collaboration with various social organizations associated with the Church, the situation of the homeless on the island. At various points in his speech, Taltavull referred to the complex situation faced by migrants arriving in Mallorca.
Among these is the "rejection" or criminalization they suffer from different sectors of society and the political sphere. "Calling them criminals is slander, a very serious accusation against people who have had to leave their homes," he said. The bishop acknowledged his concern that this type of "social rejection of people who come with all their tragedies" comes from those who "live well and lack nothing." "Then comes the political discussion, whether we should admit them or not, whether they are irregular or not... But it's a question of attitude. We Christians speak of charity, which doesn't mean benevolence, but rather that we must love without waiting to be loved. There are attitudes that we cannot accept in any way when we see such great suffering."
Taltavull wanted to make "a very clear call" to the effect that, "instead of arguing, we must look at the person independently of where they come from or their personal situation." "There are rejections that come from prejudice and that cause prejudice for others," he concluded.
