PalmPalma City Council has everything ready for the Christmas lights switch-on, which will take place on Saturday, November 22, starting at 7:00 p.m. For the first time, the event will be held in the recently renovated Plaza de España. The City Council maintains that the change of location will allow for the event to be held "with better visibility and safety conditions." This was explained on Monday by the councilors for Citizen Participation, Lourdes Roca, and for Infrastructure, Belén Soto, at a press conference. The event will begin with a visual and musical show by Grup TRUI, who will present The dance of the two starsA 35-minute artistic performance that tells the story of the reunion of Lira and Vega, two sister stars who dance guided by the light of a diamond symbolizing collective desires.

The set design will include a large central platform and an LED screen projecting images and the traditional countdown, as well as snow and smoke effects, and lighting synchronized with the soundtrack. The show will feature two acrobats, an illuminated diamond as the central element, and the Galactic Candelabra, a floating installation that will descend from the sky to become the stage for the final dance. A total of 13 artists will participate, in addition to the technical team. The production budget is €78,650.

The culminating moment will arrive with the countdown and simultaneous switching on of all the city's Christmas lights, accompanied by a final burst of luminous confetti. Roca has invited families to participate in an event that "symbolizes the start of the holidays" and is part of the municipal government's commitment to "reviving and strengthening traditions." The Cort Nativity Scene opens on Friday.

The day before, on Friday, November 21st, the traditional Cort Nativity Scene will be inaugurated. It will once again be installed in the City Hall lobby with separate entrances and exits to facilitate the visit. The Royal Mailbox will also be available so children can begin leaving their letters. The installation is a collaborative effort with the Nativity Scene Association and the artisan Margalida Nicolau.

Christmas lights in all neighborhoods

Regarding the Christmas lights, Councillor Belén Soto highlighted that this year they will reach all neighborhoods of Palma, with installations on approximately 200 public streets. A total of 3,350 light modules will be installed – 80 more than last year – along with 614,396 meters of garlands, almost 73,000 more than in 2024. The overall budget is 1.9 million euros. Among the new features is the addition of lights in areas that did not have them last year, such as Gaspar de Bennazar Avenue, Jacint Verdaguer Street, Son Espanyol, and Plaça dels Patins. The lighting in areas such as Comte Sallent Avenue, Son Sardina, Can Capiscol, Pere Garau, and General Riera, among others, will also be updated with new formats and types of lights. The City Council is maintaining other traditional elements, such as the marquee in Plaça de Sant Cosme, the 20-meter tree in Parc de les Estacions, the illuminated trees in Antoni Maura and Plaça de Raimundo Clar, and the large sphere on Passeig de Sagrera, among others.
