PalmThe Mallorca Climate Academy will host next Friday, April 17, at the Estudi General Lul·lià, the conference Eclipse 2026, survival guide, by Pep Marcús, professor, astronomical communicator and president of the Newton Club, the astronomical association of Pla y Llevant de Mallorca. The objective of the conference is to offer all the necessary information so that an astronomical phenomenon as exceptional as the total solar eclipse on August 12 can be a safe, scientifically rigorous experience and one that, as far as possible, avoids overcrowding in specific locations. With his talk, Pep Marcús, in a clear, direct and very didactic tone, will explain in an understandable way what an eclipse is, what phases it presents and what peculiarities this event will have, focusing on the observation experience from our territory. He will also offer, among others, essential recommendations to ensure a satisfactory and safe observation and will advise on the basic precautions to take and the errors to avoid.

Eye health and, therefore, the safety measures to be taken are essential and, for this reason, it will be clearly indicated what the exact homologation that observation glasses must have is, and how to carry it out safely. It is very important that we do not let ourselves be deceived because our health is at stake. Marcús will clarify it well for us and will make all the necessary information available to the public.Marcús will also provide information during the conference on where we can watch the eclipse. One of the main problems that will have to be faced is, without a doubt, mobility, which can cause genuine traffic jams, taking into account - in addition - the arrival of people from outside Mallorca (and there will be quite a few) to experience the eclipse. At this point, Marcús will explain how the eclipse can be seen in practically 60% of the island's territory, as the communicator advances. This means that one of the main recommendations will be a rational distribution of people, so that everyone tries to enjoy the eclipse where they are without making all the trips to the same points.Passionate about astronomy, with Marcús we will learn to understand this phenomenon and make it a safe and unforgettable experience. “The last eclipse of this type took place in 1905 and I have heard testimonies from grandfathers and grandmothers who told how on that August 30, 1905 it became dark at noon... and the hens went to sleep”, Marcús will tell us.... Let's see what memories we will have of August 12, 2026.

And to be even more prepared, this April, on the 24th at 6:00 PM, the terraces of the Estudi General Lul·lià will be the setting for a solar observation workshop, also led by Pep Marcús.The activity “Solar Observation at the Estudi General Lul·lià” will offer a practical experience to discover the Sun safely using an intelligent telescope. The session will allow for direct observation of the solar surface with quality and safety.During the workshop, the characteristics of the Sun and the elements that can be observed in it will be explained, as well as specific recommendations to protect ocular health. The activity combines scientific dissemination and guided practice, guaranteeing a rigorous and accessible approach to solar observation. Both the lecture on April 17th –at 6:00 PM– and the workshop on the 24th, also at 6:00 PM, have the collaboration of Caixa Colonya, Club Newton, and ASTROMO. The ticket price includes an ISO-approved pair of glasses from the ASTROMO brand.
