The Council of Mallorca will reduce the Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) rate on the island by 20.51% next year. With this reduction, the fee will drop from the current €42.23 per ton to €33.57. The initiative, announced this Monday by the president of the island institution, Llorenç Galmés, will be debated at the plenary session of the Council on November 13th. The new rate results from the annual review stipulated in the contract with the concessionaire of the public waste service, MAC Insular. Galmés noted that this is the second consecutive reduction, as the island institution lowered the CDW rate by 4% earlier this year. "In just two years, we have managed to reduce the construction and demolition waste treatment fee by 24%, far exceeding our initial target. This government is very clear that politics should serve the interests of citizens and should solve real problems, not create new ones and stifle them with tax increases."

Furthermore, he asserted that the fee reduction was achieved "without the Consell de Mallorca having to provide any subsidies," which he considered to represent "savings for the public coffers, which can then allocate this money to other public services to improve the quality of life for all residents." He also explained that the amount of construction and demolition waste entering the system increased during 2024. In fact, 744,000 tons were recorded compared to the 622,000 tons recorded in 2023. The island director of this type of waste has enabled the reduction in fees. As detailed, 99 percent of the waste received has been reused, sold to businesses and individuals, or used in other projects. For his part, the Island Councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs, and Sports, Pedro Bestard, explained that these "very positive" figures are due to the island institution "doing its homework in terms of recycling, thanks to greater public awareness and the ongoing inspections carried out to combat illegal dumping."

Furthermore, as Galmés and Bestard explained, the 2026 proposal also includes a 7% reduction in the Bulky Waste (BW) rate, from €178.15 per ton to €165.58 next year. Last year, the treatment of this type of waste reached 58,997 tons, representing a 7.4% increase compared to 2023. Additionally, waste from end-of-life tires (ELT) will be charged at €107.74 per ton, compared to the €118.03 rate in 2020. The volume of this waste treated amounts to 4,583 tons, a 13% increase in service.

Waste imports to Ibiza remain high

The president of the Consell has reiterated his intention to try to move forward with the transfer of waste from the island of Ibiza for treatment in Mallorca, despite the lack of legal backing after the Balearic Parliament, with the vote of Vox, rejected a decree on strategic projects that the island's governing team had intended to use to provide legal cover for the waste transfer. "The Consell is continuing with our plan. We hope that the necessary legal framework will be approved to carry it out. I repeat, we are continuing and hope that it will be approved as soon as possible," he stated.
