The millionaire parties with superyachts in the Balearic Islands are seen from space

This is the image offered by a satellite photograph and which allows us to visualize the extent to which private celebrations on board ships and superyachts have spread during the summer months in the Balearic Islands. Although the image is not current, it reflects a practice linked to luxury tourism that has become increasingly common in recent years and raises questions about maritime safety and the environmental impact of this type of activity.

The proliferation of superyachts off the Balearic coasts has turned some areas of the island's coastline into common settings for large luxury private parties. The high concentration of large vessels is even perceptible in satellite images, a sign of the intensification of pressure on certain maritime areas during the summer months.

The situation has once again brought to the fore the debate about the limits of Mallorca's tourist and nautical model. Parties aboard large yachts, often with numerous auxiliary boats around them, are part of a phenomenon associated with luxury tourism that has gained presence in the Balearic Islands in recent years. Environmental organizations such as GOB and Terraferida have for years referred to the high concentration of boats in coves and coastal areas that increase pressure on natural spaces already subjected to high usage.

To this situation are added the problems derived from anchoring, noise, waste generation and the saturation of certain coastal areas during the high season. The image that Terraferida has shared precisely emphasizes this contradiction: while administrations have more and more tools to control pressure on the coast – such as satellite images and other surveillance systems –, entities demand that these tools translate into effective control measures.

The Balearic Islands, the epicenter of the nautical business

The proliferation of this type of image coincides with the weight the Archipelago maintains within the nautical business. In 2025, the Balearic Islands were the main state market for registrations of leisure boats intended for charter: they registered 321 out of the 1,418 charter registrations in the entire State, close to a quarter of the total, despite experiencing an annual drop of 23.2%.

The data does not equate to the number of superyachts nor does it allow for quantifying the boats participating in these parties, but it does show the weight of the Islands within the nautical charter market.
