The phrases a Mallorcan hears when speaking to a Catalan for the first time
Content creator Toni Horrach has compiled a list of situations that arise due to both the different accent and the knowledge of the geography of the Balearic Islands.
PalmMallorcan content creator Toni Horrach has made a video in which he shares the four phrases every Mallorcan has heard when speaking to a Catalan for the first time. With a humorous tone, he reviews the situations that arise due to both the different accent and the knowledge of the geography of the Balearic Islands.
The first of these has to do with the way Catalans treat residents of the Balearic Islands.Sas Islands". Horrach points out that each island has a different idiosyncrasy and feeling, that not everything is a single territory, and that "we don't have any kind of sense of unity, we don't get along with each other, and we don't know anything about each other," he explains.
The second point he refers to is the "charming" way Catalans find in Mallorcan speech. In this sense, he criticizes Catalans for trying to imitate the accent and words used in Mallorca, and also addresses one of the topics that generates the most controversy between Mallorcans and Catalans: the "salt" (a kind of "salt-flat"). He asserts that Catalans try to "salt-flat" every word, meaninglessly, and that in Mallorca we don't talk like that.
The third aspect also has to do with geography. "Are you from Palma de Mallorca or from a village?" Horrach reminds Catalans that Mallorca is the island and Palma is the city, but that the rest of the island's municipalities are "Mallorca, not just Palma."
Finally, he addresses the Catalan perception that the Balearic Islands are like a small town where everyone knows each other. He says that when you talk to a Catalan who has acquaintances on the island, they always tell you the same thing: "Oh, are you from Mallorca? I'm sure you know Pedro de Santanyí and Joan de Palma." When asked this question, Horrach replies that in Mallorca, "there are 900,000 of us. Do you think I know everyone?" "The worst part is that you end up knowing them, and that's really annoying," Horrach says ironically.
