The rehabilitation of the Casas del Retiro, which will form part of the Palma Botanical Garden, has been approved.
The project will have a budget of 2,017,000 euros, financed with funds from the Sustainable Tourism Tax.
PalmThe Palma City Council's Governing Board has approved the preliminary design for the rehabilitation of the Casas del Retiro, a municipal building of significant heritage value that will be integrated into Palma's future Botanical Garden and will house the Bellver Forest Interpretation Center. Deputy City Council spokesperson Llorenç Bauzá explained that the project will have a budget of €2,017,000, financed by the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS), and an estimated maximum completion time of 13 months.
The project will allow the restoration of a historic building for public use and strengthen the city's cultural, heritage, and environmental offerings, in line with the objectives of the Palma 2031 bid. The new facility will become a space for disseminating information and raising awareness about the natural and historical heritage of the Bellver area.
The Casas del Retiro originated in the 18th century as a leisure residence linked to the city. Although the building underwent partial renovation between 2008 and 2011, the work was interrupted, and since then the property has suffered significant deterioration, making a comprehensive intervention necessary.
Once rehabilitated, the building will be integrated into the territorial and cultural ensemble formed by the forest and Bellver Castle, reinforcing its role as an educational space and its connection with the future Botanical Garden of Palma.
Details of the intervention
The project involves a comprehensive renovation of the building on both floors, based on criteria of energy efficiency, sustainability, safety, habitability and universal accessibility.
In this regard, the exterior spaces will be improved, with a parking area for cars and bicycles and a visitor reception area, and the immediate surroundings will be designated as a pedestrian zone. Inside, the rooms will be redesigned and the facilities completely renovated, while an elevator will be installed and an accessible route will be created from the parking area to all parts of the center.
Given the building's heritage protection status, the works will strictly respect conservation guidelines and preserve its historical and architectural values.
