Education offers more than 2,400 interim positions for the next academic year
Antoni Vera has announced that this Tuesday the process to assign places will begin
PalmThe Ministry of Education and Universities has reported that this Tuesday the process will begin to assign positions to interim teachers for the 2026-2027 academic year, with an offer of 2,417 positions. This was announced by the minister, Antoni Vera, at a press conference held to detail this procedure, following the meeting held with the directors of public education in the Balearic Islands.
Vera highlighted that this awarding process could be brought forward to mid-July (it used to be done at the end of the month), thanks to having advanced the opposition exams, for which reason it has been sought to provide "more stability" and for management teams to have the faculty constituted at the beginning of the academic year. It should be recalled that this advancement generated much controversy among teachers and complaints both before and after.
Of the total offered places, 1,557 correspond to Mallorca; 581, to Ibiza; 204, to Menorca and 75, to Formentera.
This new procedure comes after the completion of the first two provisional destination award processes for the 2026-2027 academic year. The first, initiated on June 26, was aimed at career civil servants without a destination, civil servants on leave of absence, and trainees. The second, opened on July 7, was intended for interim teachers who could keep the position they already held during the 2025-2026 academic year.
In this new call, the Ministry had initially planned 2,758 places, 193 more than the previous year. Finally, 341 have been awarded, 12% of the total offered, four percentage points more than last year. These places have been occupied by interim teachers who have been able to keep the vacancy or the temporary position they already had assigned.
Once these first two phases are closed, the 2,417 places now offered correspond to the vacancies available for candidates registered in the interim teacher pools. Overall, this year's award process began with an initial offer of nearly 3,100 places, about 360 more than last year, a figure that was later increased by nearly 1,200 more places generated by the movements of career civil servants who obtained a leave of absence.
New systems to make the process more transparent
In parallel, Education has announced several IT improvements with the aim of strengthening the transparency and security of the awarding system. Among the new features are the review of the algorithms that assign positions to detect possible errors, as well as individualized monitoring of each applicant's situation.
The real-time information available on interim staff pools will also be improved, so that each teacher will be able to check if they are available, if they already hold a position, or if they have been excluded from the pool.
Another of the new features will be the incorporation of a tool that will allow each award to be justified. Thus, applicants will be able to know why they have not obtained a position that they had requested with higher priority compared to another that has finally been assigned to them.
In addition, the calendar will continue to advance compared to other courses. After the ordinary procedure that begins this Tuesday, an urgent process is planned from July 21 and, for the first time, a specific process to cover substitutions on July 29.
Paid leave and improvements for tutors
During the meeting with the directors of public schools, other measures planned for the next academic year were also discussed. The proposal to increase the tutors' supplement, which would go from 30 to 60 euros per month, stands out.
Likewise, the Ministry is working on the regulation of a paid leave for teachers with a minimum of 10 years of service, an initiative that will still need to be finalized in negotiations with trade union organizations. The system foresees that teachers will receive a reduced salary for four years to be able to enjoy one year of paid leave in the fifth year.
Vera also informed the directors about the launch of the Docents 360 project, aimed at strengthening the support, training, and professional development of teachers, as well as the start of drafting a new decree on school autonomy and leadership function.
When asked about the possibility of the course starting with an indefinite teachers' strike, as has been proposed in other autonomous communities, the minister assured that this issue has not been discussed during the meeting and insisted that the department maintains a permanent dialogue with the representatives of the educational community.
