PalmWith slogans, dressed in blue, and eager to highlight the importance of the sea, students and teachers from CEIP Ses Rotes Velles in Calvià took to Santa Ponça beach to commemorate Mediterranean Day. The day served to emphasize the need to preserve an ecosystem essential for the environment, biodiversity, and climate regulation, and to instill in the youngest students the values of sustainability and respect for the planet. During the activity, the students read messages advocating for the care of the sea and the protection of ecosystems. Among other slogans, they proclaimed: "The sea is not a board game, but both have rules: the sea for living and games for playing," "We must care for and respect the sea," and "We want a cleaner Mediterranean, with living beings that can live safely and nature free from pollution, nets, and plastic." They also emphasized the importance of recycling and keeping beaches clean, with slogans like "Let's keep the beaches clean and recycle manure, so the future will be better. We are Blue Schools and we want more waves."

This initiative is part of the Som Escoles Blaves (We Are Blue Schools) project, in which the school has participated since the 2023-2024 academic year. The program focuses on sustainability and places special emphasis on the Sustainable Development Goal of Life Below Water. The activity aims to raise children's awareness of the importance of the sea as a source of oxygen, a habitat for thousands of living beings, and a regulator of the climate. According to Aina Amengual, the project's driving force at Ses Rotes Velles, "ecological commitment is part of our school, and we try, through different projects and activities, to bring the sea closer to people."

The sea, at the heart of education

Led by geographer and secondary school teacher Christian Esteve, Som Escoles Blaves has established itself in Mallorca as a pioneering project that aims to bring the sea to the heart of education. The initiative is based on the premise that the ocean is key to the planet's future: it provides oxygen, food, and energy, regulates the climate, and is home to enormous biodiversity. However, it remains largely unknown in classrooms, and the program focuses on promoting ocean culture as an educational core, so that children understand the importance of caring for marine ecosystems.

The project is present in dozens of educational centers in Mallorca and is aimed especially at teachers and management teams in Primary, Secondary, Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training. The activities combine classroom work, field trips, interdisciplinary projects, and practical experiences that introduce students to the marine environment and strengthen their environmental awareness. Among the project's objectives is the creation of a guide that documents the process followed in Mallorca and allows the model to be exported to other European regions, thus creating a network of Blue Schools on a continental scale. With this initiative, Mallorca aims to position itself as a European leader in ocean education and sustainability, demonstrating that knowledge of the sea can become a powerful tool for transforming how schools understand the environment and preparing future generations to protect the planet.
