Marga Prohens' announcement to reduce and subsidize the taxes that young people have to face when buying an apartment was, without a doubt, one of the strategic arguments used by the president during the general policy debate. The need to unveil a new measure that provokes positive feelings, to mitigate the predictable criticism from the opposition, has already become a classic.
The strategists chose well, since housing is the issue of the legislature, and it is also its failure. Not because she hasn't tried, there is no doubt that the president has promoted more measures than any other government, but because the problem is so serious that it will not be solved in a short time.
But it would be fixed much more if, instead of forcing all taxpayers to go without this income, real estate wealth accumulation were fiscally attacked. And even more so, if, on top of that, this real estate wealth is not intended to fulfill the function that corresponds to it.
Legal tourist apartments should be taxed more. And this, the Government can do. Also empty apartments, and it would also be necessary to pursue the simple accumulation of apartments. Because this is a policy that does not force the rest of us mortals to go without the revenue that Prohens has decided to gift to young people who buy an apartment. Whenever a tax is lowered, those at the bottom suffer. Those most in need of public policies. One must not abuse fiscal pressure, of course not. But if anyone should receive it, at this moment, it is the rentier and speculative economy. One thing is also true. Disincentivizing the accumulation of wealth is not exactly a postulate of a right-wing party. It was just an idea.
