Aemet raises to orange the alert for storms this Thursday

PalmaAemet has raised the warning level for this Thursday and forecasts a day with greater intensity of rainfall, especially in Ibiza and Formentera, which will be under an orange warning for rain and storms throughout the day, with accumulations that could reach 50 liters per square meter in one hour. These precipitations could be accompanied by wind gusts of up to 50 kilometers per hour.

In Mallorca and Menorca, an orange warning for rain and storms will also be activated for this Thursday, although the level will be lowered to yellow starting at 08:00 hours. On these islands, rainfall could reach 30 liters per square meter in one hour.

In addition, the wind associated with the storms has motivated the activation of a yellow warning for coastal phenomena in the north and northeast of Mallorca and in Menorca, with wind between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour and waves that could reach two meters in height.

Given the weather forecasts, the General Directorate for Emergencies and Interior maintains the corresponding alerts of the Meteobal Plan activated.

The orange alert for rainfall and storms (IG-1 of the Meteobal Plan) remains activated across all the Balearic Islands, as does the yellow alert (IG-0 of the Meteobal Plan) for coastal phenomena in Mallorca and Menorca.

Emergencies insists on the need not to be overconfident during these types of episodes, as meteorological conditions can change abruptly and intense precipitation can cause localized flooding, water accumulation, and incidents on the road network, torrents, and runoff areas.

Parks closed in Palma

For its part, the Palma City Council has closed since this Wednesday, at 1 p.m., and while the alert decreed for rains remains active, the Ribera park and the Can Terrers park. Likewise, the Sagrera promenade will be closed from 12:00 a.m. and Bellver park from 9 p.m. The Open Playgrounds program has also been suspended.

In Mallorca, the UIB has suspended outdoor activities, field trips, and activities in the marine environment since 1 p.m. due to the orange alert for intense rainfall. The inaugural event of the Nature Classroom, scheduled for 4 p.m., has also been cancelled.

This Wednesday, the downpours were sporadic and very localized. On the road from Randa to Llucmajor, an episode was recorded in which 25 liters per square meter fell.

For this Thursday, the UIB has also suspended university outdoor activities at the Ibiza and Formentera campus due to the orange warning. Thus, field trips and activities in the marine and coastal environment planned in the Pityusic Islands are suspended, while at the Palma and Menorca campuses, academic and administrative activity will proceed normally, as reported by the university center.

The rainfall could leave more than 50 liters per square meter in one hour, while the storms may be accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h.
