Calls to the IB Dona 24-hour service for gender-based violence rise by 22.2%

PalmThe 24-hour telephone service of the Institut Balear de la Dona (IB Dona) handled a total of 4,562 calls related to gender-based violence in 2025, representing an increase of 22.2% compared to the previous year, according to the annual report of this organization.

The service, which has a team of 16 professionals, also carried out 631 in-person support sessions, a 2.4% increase compared to 2024, which represents an average of 53 interventions per month. This resource offers specialized attention to victims, social and legal advice, support in emergency situations, and referrals to other services, in addition to assistance to family members, close environment, and professionals, explained the Ministry of Families, Social Welfare and Dependency Care.

Regarding calls, the IB Dona service registered an average of 13 per day, and in 70.8% of cases, it was the same women who contacted the service, followed by professionals from other services (21.5%). 91.3% of communications were linked to cases of gender-based violence, with a predominance of psychological violence (48.5%), followed by physical violence (24.8%) and vicarious violence (6.6%), while calls related to sexual violence represented 5.6%.

By age, most of the women attended were between 31 and 40 years old, followed by the groups aged 41 to 50 and 21 to 30 years. Regarding origin, Spanish women predominated, although cases of Colombian, Argentine, Italian, Brazilian, British, and Peruvian origin were also registered. By islands, Mallorca accounted for 80.6% of the calls, followed by Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera.

Regarding support, 92.7% were related to gender-based violence and 5.2% to sexual violence. Most of these were in Mallorca (59%), followed by Ibiza (32%). In total, 978 referrals were made to other specialized resources, mainly to island services, the municipal service of Palma, and shelters.

This IB Dona service operates through the free telephone number 900 17 89 89, which concentrates 69.3% of calls, in addition to 112 and 016, and offers attention in Catalan, Spanish, and English. It also has an online translation system to handle calls in any other language.

Deaf or mute individuals can also access the service via video interpretation through a link that the entity launched last year.

As a novelty, IB Dona has produced an informative video to facilitate the dissemination of this attention service in public spaces and waiting rooms of health centers.
