PalmThe Vino de la Tierra Mallorca initiative has released the first 500 copies of its new card game, the Game of Varieties, which aims to promote Mallorca's local grape varieties. The game can be purchased at several wineries on the island and at the offices of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). The Game of Varieties invites players to journey through vineyards, barrels, and grapes to discover Mallorca's native varieties, as well as the characteristics and interesting facts about winemaking. With 100 cards, the game allows players to complete their own vineyard with six local varieties: Callet, Manto Negro, Gorgollassa, Fogoneu, Premsal Blanc, and Giró Ros. Each player also chooses a vineyard type and a wine-growing region: Raiguer, Serra de Tramuntana, Pla, Serra de Levante, Migjorn, or Palma. The game combines entertainment and learning. Participants can advance or retreat depending on situations such as a successful harvest, a mildew infestation, or a visit from a winemaker. Players' knowledge is also tested with questions about winemaking processes, soil types, and the influence of climate and the sea on vineyards. According to Antoni Genovart of Can Axartell, "This is a very good initiative. People will be able to learn to differentiate the various local grape varieties we have," while Araceli Servera of Bodegas Ribas emphasizes that "It's a very fun and original way to promote our varieties and to raise awareness of Mallorca's winemaking heritage." The first 500 copies of the game can be purchased at the Vino de la Tierra Mallorca headquarters in Santa Maria and at the wineries Son Puig, Can Axartell, 7103 Petit Celler, Celler Nacra, Celler Ribas, and Jaume de Puntiró. Initially available in Catalan, it will also be available in English and German in the coming months.

Since its inception, the Regulatory Council of the IGP Vino de la Tierra Mallorca has focused its promotion on local varieties, currently protecting five: Premsal Blanco, Giró Ros, Manto Negro, Callet, and Gorgollassa, with three more recently approved (Escursac, Esperó de Gall, and Giró Negre).
