The Rector's Garden: Manacor's municipal park gets a new name and renovated access

ManacorThe municipal park will no longer be called the municipal park... or not only that. The Manacor City Council has already decided what name it will give to the space, which in the late 1960s ceased to be the municipal cemetery (which was definitively moved to the current Son Coletes location) to become a recreational area for everyone, where outdoor swimming pools and a multi-purpose building were later built in 1985. From now on, it will be called the Rector's Garden. This decision was made by the City Council, which consulted several experts in toponymy to try to find the original name of the space according to existing documentation. This will also be the name that will appear on the sign at the new entrance that will be built to replace the one that was recently demolished. A self-weathering steel sheet will be used, into which the letters will be cut to ensure they are clearly visible from the outside and will be illuminated at night.

The City Council has also decided on the design of the structure and the new entrance barrier, inspired by the rear gate of the Virreina Palace in Barcelona. The new structure will consist of five iron columns, illuminated from within, creating two large passageways (up to 3.5 meters high) to allow access for trucks, as well as another one-meter-wide passageway. The sign will be mounted on these three taller columns. The entire project will cost approximately €36,000 and the work will be carried out by Construccions Tamarell.

In addition, at the entrance, as is already the case in the Frailes Garden (the small square located in the former Manacor courthouse parking lot), a plaque with a peace message, inspired by a book about the IRA, will be placed.

The project is expected to take six weeks to complete. While the work is underway, access to the park, the theater, and the Local Police station will be via the side entrance on Jordi des Racó Street.
