Residents unhappy with Santanyí's manure collection: "Cala d'Or is now a shitty cove."
Residents of the municipality report that since the containers were removed, dirt has accumulated in the streets.

The Facebook groups where residents of Santanyí share their opinions on various issues in the municipality are full of complaints about the current manure collection systemA resident asks "where are the street cleaning machines?" and another believes that "Cala d'Or is now a shitty Cala." With street photos and videos filled with bags of waste, residents complain that they cannot have "overflowing dumpsters all over the municipality." A petition has even been launched to eliminate this new recycling system.
A resident of Cala d'Or who prefers to remain anonymous points out that since the door-to-door collection system was implemented and "the containers and bins have been removed, the town is following the truth." However, he believes that this recycling method "is a very good idea" but believes that "it should not have been implemented on June 10th, given all the hotels and vacation rentals in the area."
He also asks the Santanyí City Council to adopt the manure collection schedules for the residents of each population center in the municipality. Along the same lines, he emphasizes that the majority of people who live in Cala d'Or during the high season are tourists and service workers. "There are waiters who can't take out the manure because they work; they're forced to store it inside a shared apartment, and in this heat, it's incredibly embarrassing," he comments.
Opposition sources within the council add that this situation is further complicated by illegal tourist rentals. "They don't know what to do with the manure and they take it out any way they can, and there are no collection areas or green points where they can dump it."
For its part, the Santanyí City Council acknowledges that "there are things that need to be improved." The council points out that, with the implementation of the new collection system, "demand has increased exponentially" and asks "citizens to be patient as they adjust to the situation."
The municipal institution admits that tourist centers are where the most litter is present. Therefore, they point out that this week in Cala d'Or, "a different option is being offered to businesses so they can approach the truck themselves in order to adapt the service to the needs of the public and also to expedite the situation." Similarly, they emphasize that the council "is not standing still" and explain that the municipal services company "is removing bags every day."
They also deny that all containers and wastebaskets have been removed and assure that emergency areas do exist. They also emphasize that this system is yielding "very good results" and assert that the municipality has already achieved a recycling rate of nearly 57%.
