The autumn will be warmer than usual, after a summer of records in the Balearic Islands
The agency forecasts a 70% probability that the temperature between October and December will be above average
PalmaThe Balearic Islands will face an autumn with higher than usual temperatures, according to the forecast by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). The territorial center of the Islands estimates that there is a 70% probability that the quarter will be warmer than normal, following a summer that has been the hottest in the Archipelago since records began in 1961.
The Aemet spokesperson in the Balearic Islands, María José Guerrero, explained that it is most likely that the average temperature between October and December will be above 15 degrees. The heat will gradually decrease throughout the quarter, but the three months are expected, "on average and as a whole," to be warmer than usual. Thus, the projected average temperature will go from 19 degrees in October to 14 in November and 12 in December, coinciding with the progressive advance towards winter. The astronomical autumn will begin on September 23 at 2:05 a.m. and will last until December 21 at 9:50 p.m., when winter will begin.
A record-breaking summer in the Balearic Islands
The forecast comes after an "extremely hot" summer that has left several temperature records in the Islands. According to Aemet, this has been the hottest summer since 1961, with an average temperature of 27.1 ºC, three degrees above the usual value. During the summer months, records have also been reached in several indicators related to heat: the average monthly temperature, the number of heat waves, the maximum daily temperature, the warm and very warm days, the high minimum temperatures and the number of sweltering nights.
Regarding precipitation, the summer has been generally dry, although there have been two notable episodes of intense rainfall: the storms on August 20th and 21st and the torrential rains recorded this Wednesday. Aemet therefore predicts that autumn will partly maintain the thermal trend of the last few months, with a temperature higher than usual during a good part of the quarter.
