PalmCatalan has practically disappeared from the signs at the headquarters of the Consell de Mallorca (Island Council of Mallorca). This was denounced by Joan Llodrà, a councilor for MÉS per Mallorca, this Thursday during the plenary session of the Consell, where he criticized the island institution for replacing some of the interior Catalan signage in the main building with signs in Spanish and even English. The party explained in a statement that the changes were made "selectively": while signs like 'extinguisher' (fire extinguisher) – which are the same in both Catalan and Spanish – remained unchanged, signs like 'exit' were simply replaced with 'exit'. Therefore, Llodrà denounced the use of public funds for this initiative. "We thought it might be a joke, but these signs have been on the upper floors of the building for almost two months now, and we believe it's wise to rectify this."

Therefore, Llodrà demanded immediate explanations from the island institution's governing team and warned that "the Consell cannot become a space of linguistic submission." For his part, the Councilor for Finance and Public Administration, Rafel Bosch, assured that he would notify the technical services "so that the signage is done correctly." However, he wanted to "speak up in favor" of the change and defended Spanish as an official language of the territory. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that "the formal language used" by the island institution is Catalan and asked Llodrà to excuse him for having used English. Thus, Bosch assured that the island institution "will rectify the situation." Llodrà warned that the PP and Vox "are turning the Consell into a showcase for their crusade against Catalan." In fact, the island council has already eliminated the earmarked subsidies for the Balearic Cultural Association (OCB) and Youth for Language, something that, according to the opposition, demonstrates an "attack" on the island's own language and also Galmés's "submission" to Vox's demands.

"Absolute paralysis"

The spokesperson for MÁS per Mallorca in the Consell, Catalina Inès Perelló, denounced in the plenary session of the island institution the "absolute paralysis of the Government regarding the transfer of powers for economic planning and development, a commitment that the Consell unanimously demanded at the beginning of the legislature." She reiterated that the transfer is "key" for the Consell to lead economic policies aimed at diversifying the production model and promoting sectors linked to innovation, knowledge, research, and the social economy. Perelló accused the PP (People's Party) of "blocking an essential tool for Mallorca's economic future" by failing to transfer these powers. Therefore, MÁS per Mallorca demanded that the Consell and the Government comply with the mandate of the plenary session of the island institution, which called for the transfer of powers, and that they "immediately initiate a real and effective transfer process with sufficient resources."
