PalmPalma City Council has denied permission to hold an event in solidarity with Palestine as part of the Night of Art event taking place this Saturday in Palma. The permit had been formally submitted by the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Palma.

The City Council justified its denial of the event on Friday, arguing that it was not requested within the 30-day notice period typically required for such requests. This was rejected by the president of the Federation, Maribel Alcázar, who considered it a case of "censorship," given that on other occasions, during festivals in some Palma neighborhoods, permits were granted despite being outside the established deadline. They also complained that the City Council "threatened" them, warning in the denial response that the Palma Local Police had been notified.

However, the organization explained that this Friday they received approval from the Spanish government delegation to hold a protest rally against the Palestinian genocide. The rally will take place at the same venue where the event, which Palma City Council had ruled out, was supposed to take place: Plaza Frederic Chopin, at 8:30 p.m. Alcázar stated that "if they wanted to censor the event, they won't succeed; their attempt at censorship will have the opposite effect," the president of the Federation noted. In this regard, she invited everyone to attend, because "unfortunately, the Palestinian genocide has no deadline."

MÁS por Palma criticizes Cort's desire to "silence solidarity with Gaza"

MÁS por Palma criticized the PP municipal government for "censoring the 'Night of Art for Palestine'" and "silencing solidarity with Gaza." In a press release, MÉS denounced the "censorious" attitude of the PP municipal government, accusing it of preventing the event in Frederic Chopin Square. In their view, the City Council has responded with "a bureaucratic excuse," as they believe the PP "fears culture when it denounces injustices and prefers to remain silent in the face of the genocide in Gaza." "We will not remain silent," stated Neus Truyol, spokesperson for MÁS por Palma. The party has demanded that the City Council rectify "immediately" and allow the solidarity event to take place.

MÁS por Palma has claimed that the 'Night of Art for Palestine' sought to give a voice to artists and collectives who, through culture, reject the "complicit silence" in the face of the "permanent massacre" against the Palestinian people. "Death in Palestine has no deadlines. Neither does the pain and resistance of a people," Truyol remarked. For MÁS por Palma, Cort's decision "is a political act of censorship and alignment with the most reactionary discourse."

The PSIB will not participate in the institutional events of the Night of Art due to the "censorship" by the City Council.

The PSIB will not attend the institutional events for the Night of Art and has accused the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, of denying the holding of an event in defense of Palestine at Mallorca for Palestine and at the Federation of Neighbors.

According to the party in a statement, they understand this event as a "serious case of censorship." The secretary general of the Palma Socialist Group (ASP), Iago Negueruela, has expressed that "Ayuso has banned Palestinian flags in Madrid and that the mayor is following in her footsteps and doing the same in Palma." In response, the PSIB has indicated that this Saturday at 8:30 p.m. it will be in Chopin Square to support the Palestinian cause and will not appear at any event organized by the institutions. The party recalled that the PP and Vox voted, this Thursday, against a motion to defend the rights and freedoms of the press in Palestine.
