The Correllengua Flame fills the Plaza de España and reclaims Catalan in Mallorca
The tour will continue to l'Alguer and the European Parliament. Young people from Mallorca for the Language and Balearic Cultural Work demand the normalization of the use of Catalan in Mallorca.
PalmThe central reception event of the Flama del Correllengua Agermanat in Mallorca, organized by Joves de Mallorca per la Llengua and l'Obra Cultural Balear, filled the Plaza de España in Palma this Sunday, highlighting "the commitment" of Mallorcan society to the Catalan language. This year marks the tenth edition of the Correllengua passing through Mallorca since the first one in 1995.
After touring the island since Saturday morning, the flame of the language arrived this Sunday at the Plaza de España. It entered via Sant Miquel street with a section of relevant personalities carrying the torch, such as the president of GOB, Teresa Cuennet; the president of the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Palma, Maribel Alcázar; the writers Sebastià Alzamora and Josep Lluís Aguiló, and the artist Jaume Falconer, from the Plaza de la Porta Pintada.
On behalf of Joves de Mallorca per la Llengua, an organization that has been organizing the Correllengua in Mallorca for 31 years, Maria Maians and Josep Buades have spoken. Maians recalled that "young people are not tired" and that "the Correllengua is an example that we will fight for Catalan as far as necessary." Buades asked that the initiative be "the spark" that ignites "the future of the Catalan language" and advocated for a future in which Catalan is "as normal in Mallorca as Spanish is in Madrid."
The president of Obra Cultural Balear, Antoni Llabrés, highlighted that "the Correllengua Agermanat is not just a party: it is a collective cry" and underlined the role of youth in defending the language: "the future is not written, it is built every day."
After the central event in Palma, the Correllengua Agermanat still has two final stages: on May 5th in l'Alguer (Sardinia) and on May 9th in the European Parliament, where the official status of Catalan in the European Union will be demanded. In total, approximately 1,500 kilometers will have been covered between Prada and l'Alguer, with about 80 stops.
On Saturday, the Flama de la Llengua traveled through various municipalities in Llevant de Mallorca and culminated the day with a massive concert by La Gossa Sorda.
The Flama arrived in Mallorca by sea from Menorca and disembarked in Cala Rajada, from where it began the tour through the Llevant of the island, passing through Capdepera, Artà, Son Servera, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Manacor, Vilafranca de Bonany, Porreres, and Felanitx, with activities in each municipality.
