The new metro line will connect Palma with Son Espases in 10 minutes starting in 2033
The new metro line project anticipates an investment of up to 300 million euros, including the purchase of new trains.
PalmPalma will have a new metro line connecting the Intermodal Station with Son Espases University Hospital in just ten minutes. The infrastructure, expected to be operational by 2033, will represent a significant expansion of the urban rail network and improve connections to several neighborhoods and key facilities in the city. The project envisions a route of approximately six kilometers, although only four will be newly constructed and entirely underground. The line will depart from the Intermodal Station and utilize the existing Jacint Verdaguer and Son Costa stations, extending with new stops at Son Hugo, Son Rossinyol, Son Espases, and Secar de la Real, before reaching Son Serra Perera.
Travel time will be one of the main attractions of the new connection. It is estimated that the journey to Son Espases Hospital will take ten minutes, while the entire route will not exceed eleven. This reduction in travel time will especially facilitate access to the main hospital in the Balearic Islands, as well as other residential, industrial, and service areas.
Regarding demand, the Government estimates that the line could reach up to three million passengers annually. This figure would represent a significant increase for the entire rail system and would contribute to strengthening the use of public transport in Palma, especially in a context of growing urban mobility.
The project is currently in the initial planning phase, after the completion of preliminary studies. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2029 and last for three years. The estimated budget is 230 million euros, a figure that could increase to 300 million euros if the purchase of new train units is included.
In the political sphere, the Government defends this action as a commitment to more efficient and sustainable mobility, although it is still awaiting state funding for railway projects. Meanwhile, the Executive plans to move forward with its own resources to promote this new infrastructure.
With this expansion, Palma will strengthen its metro network and improve connections to strategic points in the city, especially to Son Espases, one of the main healthcare centers in the Balearic Islands.
