The outcry against massification reaches the Consolat: Prohens will receive GOB and Terraferida

PalmaAfter a summer marked by social mobilizations against the tourism model, GOB and Terraferida already have a date to personally convey their demands to the President of the Government, Margalida Prohens. The head of the Executive will receive the representatives of the environmental organizations on Tuesday, September 24, at 6 p.m.

The meeting will serve to address the demands raised in the various protests called over the last few months, which reached their peak on July 26. That day, the most massive mobilization of the legislature, with 70,000 participants, according to the organizers, marched through the streets of Palma and ended with police charges at Les Voltes. That day, tens of thousands of people shouted all kinds of slogans against tourism excess and showed how a significant part of island society is tired of the collapse. The demonstration was called by Menys Turisme, Més Vida and GOB, with the support of 145 entities, to denounce the effects of the tourism model.

The call that began the hottest summer of the legislature in terms of citizen mobilizations was the human chain at Es Trenc. With the slogan ‘Es Trenc is not to be touched; not before, not now, not ever’, on July 6, ten thousand people also gathered in this protected area to demand that its protection be maintained and that the Government of the Balearic Islands refrain from making any downward modification to the Natural Park, as civil society suspects, following a regulatory change that allows intervention in this protected space without going through Parliament.

Protests against the harmful effects of tourism have not stopped and have continued over the weeks. In Sóller, thousands of people demonstrated against the effects of tourist overcrowding. Another example has been the neighborhood gathering promoted by the Brunzzit collective 'Dimecres a la Llesca', which filled the touristified Passeig del Born in the city for a large outdoor dinner. The latest call was the human chain organized by Madò Farta, last August 29. An action to enjoy the cool air collectively at the Plaça d'Espanya in Palma.

The next planned mobilization is this Sunday, September 20th, in Palma. The Platform against Airport Expansion joins the demonstrations also called in Ibiza and Barcelona to demand that airport expansion projects be halted. Specifically, they warn that Aena and the Ministry of Transport plan to increase the capacity of Son Sant Joan airport to 35.7 million passengers.
