Education activates the 2026-2027 substitute teacher pool: key dates and criteria you can't overlook

PalmThe Regional Ministry of Education and Universities opened the public call this Tuesday to create the new pool of candidates for temporary teaching positions for the 2026/2027 academic year. The application period will remain open until February 24, according to the terms and conditions published by the department. In accordance with the regulations, on February 4, 2026, candidates already admitted to the 2025/2026 pool who meet the required criteria will be automatically integrated into the new pool. Specifically, those who, since September 1, 2025, have worked as temporary teachers for at least one day or have participated at least once in the standard substitution process will be included. This automatic integration will affect a total of 5,195 teachers.

The call for applications maintains the improvements introduced in the previous edition, with the aim of strengthening working conditions and promoting work-life balance for temporary teaching staff. Among the key measures is the division of Mallorca into five zones, a system intended to facilitate the allocation of positions by taking into account the personal and family circumstances of applicants. In Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, however, the single-zone model, in place until now, remains.

The process also reinforces the criterion of giving greater weight to having passed competitive examinations, even if a position was not obtained, as recognition of the effort and preparation of the applicants. Furthermore, the terms and conditions guarantee that no one will be excluded due to their qualifications, provided they are suitable for teaching the specializations stipulated in current regulations. With this call for applications, the Ministry of Education aims to ensure that all vacant positions are filled at the start of the 2026/2027 academic year and guarantee the normal operation of schools in the Balearic Islands.
